Fudge Marble Cookies

Serve these fudge marble cookies after a dinner of Buffalo Ranch Chicken Wraps and Crash Hot Potatoes.

I hadn’t bought a cake mix in a really long time. I was looking through my cookbook collection and saw one from Duncan Hines. All the recipes used cake mixes but I didn’t have any.

Then, I was grocery shopping and all Duncan Hines mixes were on sale. It was a sign I needed some, so I picked up a couple. Fudge Marble and Dark Chocolate Fudge are my favorites.

If you need a quick cookie recipe, these would be perfect. 5 ingredients and they mix and bake up quic,

How to make Fudge Marble Cake Mix Cookies

  1. First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats and set aside.
  2. To a large bowl, add the yellow portion of the cake mix and the egg, oil, and 3 Tablespoons of water. Mix with a hand mixer until smooth.
  3. To a small bowl, add the chocolate packet and mix with 1 Tablespoon of water with a fork until combined. If it’s too dry, slowly drizzle in more water as you stir until it comes together.
  4. Then, scoop out 2/3 cup of the yellow batter and mix it with the chocolate batter.
  5. Pour chocolate chips into the remaining yellow batter and stir to distribute.
  6. Finally, gently pour the chocolate batter into the yellow batter and fold to make swirls. Don’t over mix!

What if I can’t find the fudge marble cake mix?

If your market doesn’t carry the fudge marble cake mix (many of you have told me that), I have a workaround for you:

Buy a 15 oz yellow cake mix & prepare it according to the package instructions. Once you have the batter, remove 2/3 cup of it & pour it into a small bowl.

To the reserved batter, add 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder and 1.5 tablespoons of water, mixing until well blended.

Resume following the recipe as stated below & enjoy!

Can I freeze them?

Yes, baked cookies can be frozen, or you can freeze the prepared dough balls before baking.

I made this recipe only once so far and usually don’t eat many of the cookies I make but these are really good! Definitely a keeper and great idea instead of just the cake mix.

These look amazing, however I am having trouble finding a marbled cake mix, I’ve been looking at grocery stores from big chain to more speciality. What would be your suggestion for a substitute? The only thing I can think of is to mix 1/2 box of vanilla cake mix with 1/2 box of chocolate mix?? I know I can just use a solid mix and it would be fine, but I really like how the marble cake looks. Thank you.

    1. Hi! I’ve been hearing that they’re hard to find a lot lately. I’m going to have to experiment but here’s what I think will work – buy a regular 15 oz yellow cake mix & prepare as stated in the recipe card. Reserve the portion mentioned & add cocoa powder & water until it’s the right consistency (this is where I’ll have to play with amounts), then swirl back into the yellow mix & continue as written. If you try, please report back!

In a small bowl I combined 2 tablespoons of powdered baking chocolate powder with one and 1/2 tablespoons of water, then removed 2/3 cup of prepared yellow cake and stirred til well blended. Followed your recipe from that point and they were fantastic. Thank you for this recipe.

I’ve made the recipe years ago when they still had marble cake mix in stores. Decided to try using the fudge packet from a Ghirardelli brownie mixture with a hello w cake batter- do not recommend. Hahaha Next time I’ll try using just some cocoa powder! Still gray flavor and wonderful cookies though having made them in the past!

  4. These tasted very good but were drier and much more crumbly than I like my cookies to be. I followed the instructions perfectly.

    1. I’m hearing that often more often. You can order on Amazon, though they’re pricey. I have been meaning to test this but haven’t yet – buy a 15.25 ounce box of yellow cake mix, prepare as directed on the box then scoop out around 2/3 cup of the batter. Mix 1-2 Tablespoons of cocoa powder into it and possibly thin with water if needed. Then prepare as directed. Like I said, I haven’t tested that yet but I *think* it will work. If you experiment, please let me know how it goes!
