This brownie batter dip is made without raw eggs  and we heat treat the brownie mix so it’s totally safe to eat. So, now’s your chance to be a kid again and lick the bowl clean! 

Brownie dip tastes exactly as you think it would. It’s chocolatey, creamy, slightly fudgy, and tastes like a bowl of chocolate brownie batter which doesn’t need to be baked to be enjoyed!

Tools you’ll need

  • Mixing Bowls
  • Hand Mixer – An electric mixer will get the dip nice & creamy.
  • Spatulas – I have too many of these but they’re good for everything!


Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to gather to make this recipe, why you need them, and possible substitutions. Scroll all the way down for the full recipe card with measurements.

  • Cream Cheese – Bring a block of full-fat cream cheese to room temperature so that it can be whipped easily without leaving behind any lumps. This adds a delicious tangy element but also thickens up the dip and gives it a nice fudgy consistency.
  • Boxed Brownie Mix – Use your favorite kind, preferably without any chocolate chunks already in it. We will heat-treat it before we do anything else! Look for around 18 ounces.
  • Milk – I use 2% for consistency. The higher the fat content, the richer the creamy texture will be. Using heavy cream is also an option.
  • Chocolate Chips – Finding bits of chocolate throughout the dip is a pleasant surprise and a nice textural element – mini chocolate chips or full size can be used, I prefer mini. Save some for garnish or you can also use chopped chocolate or chocolate chunks instead.
  • Whipped Topping – Thawed Cool Whip provides the right amount of sweetness while keeping it light and airy. You can use homemade whipped cream if preferred, but I recommend stabilized whipped cream so it doesn’t deflate quite as easily.

How to make Brownie Batter Dip

  1. Step One: Heat treat the brownie mix before you begin. Pour it out of the package into a microwave-safe large bowl and heat it for 30-second intervals for a total of 2 minutes, stirring in between each interval. You need it to reach 160° using a thermometer to be safe. Each microwave runs differently so that may be longer or shorter than 2 minutes for you.
  2. Step Two: In a separate medium mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth. Doing this first ensures an even smooth, lump-free texture. Then, add the brownie mix and milk and continue beating until smooth. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  3. Step Three: Gently fold in the whipped topping until fully incorporated but be careful not to overmix. You want to keep it light and airy so it doesn’t deflate.
  4. Step Four: Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and sprinkle with additional chocolate chips for presentation. Serve it immediately with your favorite variety of dippers!

What to serve with Brownie Batter Dip

So many fun dippable items to choose from. We love pretzels for that sweet and salty combination. Fresh fruit dipped in chocolate is always a good idea. Strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple peaches, apples, you name it!

Graham crackers, animal crackers, and all types of cookies are fun, and you can even buy a separate box of brownies to bake. Slice them up and use the squares to scoop up the brownie dip!

If you’re making a spread of easy desserts, add some cosmic brownieschocolate chip cookies, and Amish sugar cookies.

Tips & Suggestions 🍫

  • DO NOT SKIP heat treating the brownie mix. Raw flour in brownie mixes and cake mixes should always be treated to avoid ingesting harmful bacteria.
  • You can choose to heat treat your mix in the oven if preferred. Spread it out on a rimmed baking sheet for 5 minutes in a preheated 350° F oven. Whichever way, make sure it reaches 160° F.
  • Add the ingredients together in the order listed. Whipped topping is always last. Mixing the other ingredients first allows the whipped topping to just be gently folded in to blend. Otherwise, you’ll end up overmixing if you add it with the other ingredients first.
  • Make it ahead, cover it with plastic wrap, and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve it.
  • This versatile dip can be used for much more! Spread it on top of toast, pancakes, inside crepes, or over waffles!

How to store leftovers

Keep it airtight in the fridge. It will harden the longer it stays cold, so it’s important it stays in an airtight container so it doesn’t lose moisture.

How long will brownie dip last in the fridge?

For up to 3 days.

Can I freeze dessert dip?

I don’t recommend it. Once it thaws the texture of the dip will be funny.

How to reheat it

No need to reheat it, however, if it’s been in the fridge, you’ll want to bring it to room temperature before serving it, so that it’s not hard and cold.

What can I use to thin out brownie batter?

The milk serves this purpose, so if you find it’s still not thin enough, you can add a splash more.

Can I use this recipe to bake a batch of brownies?

Nope! This isn’t the same as a typical raw brownie batter.

However, what I like to do sometimes is buy a separate box of brownie mix (or make brownies from scratch), follow the directions on the package to bake a batch, and use those brownies to dip into the batter dip. So good!

What else can I mix into this edible brownie batter?

Throw in some chopped nuts for added crunch or sprinkles for added color. Mini marshmallows, Reese’s pieces, peanut butter chips, or M&Ms would be great too.

  • 8 ounces cream cheese at room temperature
  • 18.3 ounces brownie mix I used Betty Crocker
  • ¼ cup milk I use 2%
  • ¼ cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1 cup whipped topping thawed (Cool Whip)


  • Add the brownie mix to a large microwave safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds. Stir and repeat for a total of 2 minutes, stirring between each 30 second interval.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, add the softened cream cheese and beat with a hand mixer on medium until smooth.
  • Add the brownie mix and milk to the cream cheese, and beat until well combined and smooth.
  • Stir in the chocolate chips.
  • Gently fold in the whipped topping until fully incorporated. Do not overmix.
  • Transfer the dip to a serving bowl, and top with additional chocolate chips, if desired.
  • Serve the dip immediately with your favorite dippers, such as pretzels, cookies, graham crackers, or fruit.



  • Raw flour (brownie mix, cake mix, etc.) should always be heat treated to avoid any potential bacteria. If you prefer using the oven over the microwave, spread the brownie mix onto a lipped sheet pan and bake for 5 minutes at 350° F. 
  • Start with room temperature cream cheese to avoid any lumps.
  • Mixing the cream cheese alone first ensures optimal texture.
  • Beating the cream cheese, brownie mix and milk together first minimizes the mixing once the whipped topping is added. If you overmix whipped topping, it will “deflate”.
  • Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.
