Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip has just FIVE ingredients and it makes a big batch that’s perfect for parties, get-togethers, or game days! Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe
Easy Buffalo Chicken Dip
This buffalo chicken dip recipe was actually my very first slow cooker experience. Growing up, my mom never used one, so I never used one. But now, I love using mine.
This easy crockpot buffalo chicken dip recipe gets rave reviews every time I bring it to a party and I’m always asked for the recipe – some even refer to it as “crack dip” because it’s addictive. Luckily I have this lil blog to point people to 😉
Why you’ll love this crock pot buffalo chicken dip recipe
Perfect Appetizer – Whether it’s for a super bowl party or just a weekend gathering, it is always a hit.
So much flavor – The buffalo wing sauce combines with the shredded cheese and chicken to give the perfect creamy texture. It’s great for serving with your favorite cracker, veggies, or baguette slices.
Tried & true – You don’t just have to take my word for it, this recipe has over 300 five star reviews! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Equipment needed to make Buffalo Chicken Dip
- Slow Cooker – I’ve had this slow cooker for years and highly recommend it.
- Chip & Dip Serving Set – This is cute, though I like to serve out of the slow cooker to keep it warm.
- Frank’s WING Sauce – Make sure you get wing sauce and not just straight up hot sauce. Unless you’re into super hot.
- Cheese Grater – I highly recommend grating your own cheese off a block for the best quality. It melts much nicer than bagged cheese that is coated with anti-caking agents.
- Serving Spoon – For scooping up all that goodness.
Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip Ingredients
There are only five, everyday ingredients in this recipe which makes it super easy. Scroll all the way down for the full recipe card with measurements.
- Cooked & Shredded Chicken – I like to season then boil boneless, skinless chicken breasts when I make this recipe. You could also shred up a rotisserie chicken. Or, I suppose you could use canned chicken, but please don’t. It grosses me out haha
- Cream Cheese – Cube up a brick of cream cheese.
- Ranch Dressing – Hidden Valley is the brand I usually have on hand. Use your favorite.
- Frank’s Wing Sauce – Make sure you grab wing sauce and not regular hot sauce.
- Cheddar Cheese – Shredded cheddar cheese, whether you shred it yourself (which I recommend) or buy a bag of pre-shredded. I usually use Mild Cheddar.
How to make Buffalo Chicken Dip in the slow cooker
- STEP ONE: First, if you need to cook your chicken, I like to season with salt & pepper & seasoned salt then boil it in either water or chicken broth for 10 minutes at a rapid boil. Then remove and shred, either with forks, or throw it into your stand mixer with the paddle attachment to make things really easy. Alternatively, you can make instant pot shredded chicken.
If you have pre-cooked chicken (like a rotisserie chicken or make a whole chicken in the slow cooker), just shred it up.
- STEP TWO: Then, add all ingredients to the slow cooker and cook on HIGH for about an hour, stirring after 30 minutes.
- STEP THREE: Stir then turn the heat to LOW or WARM while serving.
That’s it! So easy.
Can I make it in the oven?
Yes, if you don’t want to use the slow cooker, you can make the buffalo chicken dip on the stovetop or bake it in the oven. Either way, you’re just melting the ingredients together.
If baking in the oven, mix together the ingredients, spread it into a baking dish and top with a layer of cheese and bake at 350° for approximately 20-30 minutes.
FAQs
Just 5 simple ingredients – cooked chicken, cream cheese, ranch dressing, wing sauce, and lots of cheese!
Serve this dip with tortilla chips or celery sticks. Or, I’ve even had friends pile it onto pita bread & eat it as a sandwich. Carrot sticks, cucumber slices, or any crackers will also work.
No, they are not the same. Hot sauce is a blend of cayenne pepper, vinegar, and salt. It is pretty spicy. Buffalo sauce is hot sauce that has been thinned with butter and other ingredients. Buffalo sauce is much milder than straight up hot sauce.
Tips and Tricks
- Use a rotisserie chicken if you don’t feel like making your own.
- Start with room temperature cream cheese to get it to melt more evenly.
- Make sure you get Frank’s WING sauce and not regular hot sauce. Wing sauce is basically hot sauce thinned out with butter to make it less intense.
How to store leftovers & reheat
We very rarely have leftovers but if you do, scoop any leftover dip into an airtight storage container and place it in the refrigerator.
You can either reheat it in portions in the microwave, or if you have a lot leftover, you can place it back into the slow cooker on WARM to heat through.
Ways to repurpose leftovers
If you do happen to have leftovers and aren’t feeling very dippy, here are some ways you can transform your buffalo chicken dip into something even more delicious:
- Buffalo Chicken Quesadillas
- Buffalo Chicken Eggrolls
- Buffalo Chicken Pinwheels
- Buffalo Chicken Bread
- Buffalo Chicken Pizza

Just made this!! Used 1.5 lbs of boneless skinless chicken breast and seasoned both sides with salt, pepper and Lawrys seasoned salt. I cut the breasts long ways down the center to make it less thick to boil faster and used chicken broth and 2 cups of plain water! The chicken was pretty dang good alone! But followed the recipe and now we all have belly aches from stuffing our face with this dip! Will do again! And so cheap to make! Loved it!!!

Omg, made this for thanksgiving and it was a hit! Used a bottle of ranch and Frank’s buffalo wing sauce(basically what the measurements added up to) I made a serving for 24. Used mild and sharp cheddar 1 block each! Seasoned the chicken overnight with black pepper, season salt, adobo, onion/garlic powder, paprika and a lil chili powder. Followed the cooking instructions as is. Used some vegetable broth and water to boil the chicken! Definitely making this agin

1. How long would you could this on for low? 2. Could you technically cook the chicken whole and then shred it?
I’m trying to make this recipe while out at a different location for a gender reveal, then come back to it done (or almost done).
Melissa Williams says
Hi. You can cook the chicken any way you want. All you’re doing in the slow cooker is melting everything together. I usually start mine on high then switch to warm while serving.

What size slow cooker works best for this recipe?
Melissa Williams says
I use a 6 qt 🙂
L says
Why can’t you throw all the ingredients in the crockpot? This remind me of “crack” chicken in a way with the ranch and cr cheese only difference is axding the buffalo sauce. I think of course it would increase your cook time but don’t see why you couldn’t also do it this way

Today was my first time every making buffalo chicken dip. I followed the recipe to a “T”. And it was amazing, my husband and kids said add this to the list from now on.
Linda says
Love this recipe whether made in a slow cooker or in the oven in a baking dish. Then I layer it.
Shredded chicken coated with Franks first. Melted cream cheese mixed with either ranch dressing or sour cream and topped with cheese. When the cheese is nice and bubbly it’s ready!
Either method is wonderful and always a big hit!
Melissa Williams says
Thanks, Linda! I have baked it before, too. I even put it in the IP once, but that was my least favorite method lol
Leslie says
Is there any other sauce you would recommend for this? My husband really doesn’t like Buffalo sauce but I really want a tasty chicken dip for a birthday party.
Melissa Williams says
Hi Leslie – I would suggest just picking another recipe if he doesn’t like buffalo sauce. I haven’t tested swapping buffalo with anything since you’re mixing it with ranch & cream cheese & they pair well together.
Cae says
I use regular Frank’s hot sauce
Katie says
Absolutely love this! Definitely a favorite at our house 🙂 my fiancé isn’t officially lactose-intolerant but has some issues after eating this, do you think using dairy-free alternatives would have a huge affect on the taste? I know it will a little, but I want him to be able to fully enjoy. Thanks for the awesome recipe!
Melissa Williams says
I’m glad you like it! Unfortunately, I’ve never tested it with dairy-free alternatives. Crystal Farms used to make a lactose-free cheese (I haven’t looked for it in awhile) but maybe that is an option?

Excellent. Made it for a crowd and everyone loved it. Spicy but not too hot. I boiled the chicken and shredded it. Simple. Will Definitely make it again. Goes a long way. Certainly a crowd pleaser for sure!,

I’m so glad it was a hit! Thanks for reporting back 🙂

I always use regular Frank’s hot sauce instead of Buffalo hot sauce! IMO, it tastes better with regular Frank’s!

We prefer the wing sauce 🙂
