Bunny Butt Cheese Ball

I love a clever and whimsical appetizer that makes any gathering that much more festive!

At Christmas time, I have a savory snowman cheese ball, and for this year’s Easter celebration, I’ve got a sweet dessert cheese ball on the menu!

This easy easter appetizer is so much fun to make and not just because the kids and I like to sample the candy along the way. It’s because it’s a bunny butt cheese ball and it gets a lot of laughs!

It’s made with cream cheese, strawberry cake mix, sprinkles, and white chocolate chips, and as an added bonus it’s a no-bake dessert dip that can be kept in the fridge and made ahead of time.

If you’re looking for a great party appetizer this year, alongside Easter chick dipped wafer cookies, and this Easter egg fruit pizza, add an easy funfetti bunny butt cheese ball to your easter dessert table. It’ll be an instant hit!

Why you’ll love this Easter Bunny Dessert Cheese Ball 🐰

Festive – It’s a cute bunny butt! Kids love it, adults love it, and it’s an easy way to impress your guests.

Customizable – The perfect sweet treat can be adjusted to suit your tastes or what you’ve got on hand. See below for substitutions.

Delicious – It’s creamy, sweet, and not too cheesy. The way a cream cheese dessert should be (I’m looking at you cheesecake!). The strawberry flavor comes through and the added textures from the chocolate chips and coconut flakes add even more tasty fun!

Things you’ll need

Ingredients

Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to gather to make this recipe. Scroll all the way down for the full recipe card.

  • Cream Cheese – Take the block of cream cheese out of the fridge ahead of time so that it’s softened to room temperature by the time you need it.
  • Sugar – The sweetness that balances out the tangy cream cheese turning it into a dessert!
  • Strawberry Cake Mix – This is the flavor my kids love, but you can swap it for any cake flavor you’d like. Chocolate or funfetti cake mix are other fun ones. Raw cake mix should be heat treated to kill any potential bacteria in raw flour. Do this by spreading the mix onto a baking sheet and heating it at 350° for 5 minutes.
  • Multicolored Sprinkles – Adding sprinkles naturally makes it a funfetti cheese ball. You could make this for kids’ birthday parties too!
  • White Chocolate Chips – Added crunchy bits of white chocolate throughout the dip to add a sweet chocolatey flavor and pleasing texture.
  • Shredded Sweetened Coconut – To coat the ball for the rabbit fur.
  • Pink Chocolate Candies – These candy-coated chocolate are placed on the bottoms of the feet to represent the pads on the little bunny paws.
  • Cookies For Dipping – Graham Crackers and Vanilla Wafers are what I usually have for dipping. Their vanilla flavor pairs well with the dip.

How to make an Easter Bunny Dessert Cheese Ball

  1. Step One: To a medium mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to mix the cream cheese, sugar, and cake mix until well combined. Then, stir in the sprinkles and white chocolate chips. Refrigerate this mixture for about 1 hour.
  2. Step Two: Remove the cream cheese mixture from the fridge and separate it into 1 large ball, 2 medium balls, and 1 small ball. This will be for the body, the two feet, and the tail.
  3. Step Three: Pour the shredded coconut into a bowl and roll each ball, one at a time, into the coconut. Press it into them gently so that it sticks and no spots are left bare.
  4. Step Four: Assemble the bunny and press the chocolate candies into his feet for the pads on its paws. Chill in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.

What to serve with a sweet cheese ball

Cookies are great for diving right in and scooping up all that sweet creamy dip.

As mentioned above, vanilla wafers and graham crackers are great.

You could also use golden Oreos, pretzels, or fresh fruit like apple slices or pear slices, and strawberries too.

If you want to pair it with a savory option, try my Easter Cheese Ball – looks like a carrot! Or keep the bunny theme and serve it with an Easter bunny cake.

If you need another no-bake option, try some slow cooker Easter candy.

Tips & Suggestions 🐇

  • Use your favorite flavor cake mix. Funfetti, vanilla, chocolate, you name it.
  • You can also use any sprinkles you like in your Easter bunny dessert cheese ball.
  • If you prefer to skip the coconut flakes, you can roll the balls into powdered sugar or shaved white chocolate instead.
  • Use a jumbo marshmallow on the cute bunny butt for the bunny’s tail.
  • Swap the pink M&Ms or pink chocolate candy for pink jelly beans.
  • If you’ve got a lot of cream cheese mixture, feel free to turn the bunny butt into a complete rabbit. Add a head and bunny ears if you’d like.

How to store leftovers

Keep leftovers for the easter bunny dessert cheese ball wrapped in plastic wrap for up to 5 days in the fridge.

Take it out to soften before serving it. The longer it stays in the fridge, the more solid it will be.

FAQs

Can I make this as a savory appetizer dip?

You can! Use my snowman cheese ball recipe but shape it like a bunny. The carrots that snowmen and bunnies have in common are a bonus!

The feet and tail aren’t sticking to the body, what can I do?

Insert toothpicks to hold them onto the body. You may need to add some more shredded coconut to cover up any blemishes.

Can I make this ahead?

Totally! Make the cream cheese mixture ahead of time, and form the balls. Cover them in plastic wrap until you’re ready to assemble the bunny and serve. Wait until just before serving to add the coconut fur, otherwise, the Easter bunny dessert cheese ball may get soggy the longer it sits.

  1. 4 stars
    The directions say to
Separate the mixture into one large ball, two medium size balls, and one small ball.
Form the 2 medium balls into a slight triangle shape for the ears.

I don’t see anywhere to put ears, and there’s no mention of the 2 balls for the hind paws.

    1. It’s one large ball for the bunny bottom, two medium size for the feet, and one small one for the bunny tail.
