A hoagie, by definition, is “a sandwich made of a long roll filled with meat, cheese, and salad”.

Hoagie Dip is all those components in dip-form.

It is the perfect dish to bring to your next BBQ, picnic, game day, party, or even office potluck.

Unlike some of the heavier dip options (I’m looking at you buffalo chicken dip), this delicious dip is lighter by taking all the fixings of Italian subs, chopping it up, and making an almost salad-like dip.

What is hoagie dip?

Never heard of it? Let me rock your world.

Imagine chopping up your favorite submarine sandwich and enjoying it deconstructed. That’s what hoagie dip is.

It is made from lettuce, banana peppers, provolone cheese, and lunch meats all chopped up into bite-sized pieces and dressed with Italian seasoning and dressing.

Then, you take your favorite bread rounds (or crackers) and scoop it up to enjoy.

Why you’ll love this Hoagie Dip Recipe

  • Fun Twist – Instead of serving a classic sandwich on sub rolls, this remix is a fun way to serve the same flavors.
  • Flavor Explosion – Because you’re chopping everything up into bite-size pieces, you get a little bit of so many flavors in each bite. Perfectly blended!
  • Huge Hit – Try serving it at your next party or alongside other game day snacks at the super bowl. It will be a crowd favorite!

Equipment you’ll need

Ingredients in Homemade Hoagie Dip

Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to gather to make this recipe. Scroll all the way down for the full recipe card.

  • Onion – Half of a red onion, thinly sliced.
  • Peppers – Either banana peppers or a mix of sweet & hot salad peppers.
  • Lettuce – One heart of romaine lettuce, finely chopped. You could also pick up a bag of shredded lettuce.
  • Tomatoes – Cherry tomatoes work really well.
  • Deli Meat – You want layers of Italian meats. I use turkey, ham, salami (genoa salami, hard salami, etc.) but you can use any combo you like (maybe try pepperoni?) as long as it totals one pound.
  • Provolone Cheese – I prefer provolone but american cheese will work as well. Chop it up.
  • Mayo – Mayo helps to dress the creamy dip.
  • Italian Dressing – Use your favorite Italian dressing or seasoned submarine oil that you can get from the sandwich shop or deli counter.
  • Italian Seasoning – I like homemade Italian seasoning but you can pick up a blend from the market.
  • Bread – French bread, Italian bread, etc. Use your favorite for dipping. You can also pick up a bread bowl to serve the dip out of.

What to serve with it

If you’re serving a bunch of appetizers or dips, you could serve this alongside other savory dips like:

If you want to keep with the dip theme for dessert, pair it with some sweet dips like easy Oreo Dip and Peanut Butter Cup Cookie Dough Dip.

Possible Substitutions/Additions

  • Like more heat on your hoagies? Add red pepper flakes or hot peppers to the mix.
  • Mix and match any of the lunch meat, as long as it equals up to one pound in the end.
  • Add in your favorite sub toppings- cucumbers, black olives, jalapenos, etc. would all be great additions.
  • For a low carb version, serve this dip with lettuce leaves instead of slices of bread.
  • Serve it out of a bread bowl instead of a regular bowl for a fun (& delicious!) presentation.

How to store leftovers

Leftover dip should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

How long will hoagie dip last in the fridge?

2-3 days. It doesn’t take long to get soggy, so it’s best enjoyed freshly made.

FAQs

Can you use other meats and cheeses?

Absolutely, this Hoagie Dip isn’t limited to just those lunch meats and cheeses. They’re just the most common things found on a Hoagie. But you can use whatever deli meat you prefer and whatever cheese choices you’d like to have.

Can I prep it ahead of time?

You can choose to prep some of this dip ahead if you need to save time. I just recommend waiting to add the lettuce until you’re ready to serve it. Otherwise, it will all start to wilt and get soggy.

If you do prep things ahead of time, store each component individually in the refrigerator until ready to assemble.

How many does it serve?

Dips are always open to interpretation based on serving size, but this should serve about 8 people.
