Do you remember my monkey cupcakes? The “fur” I used was chocolate sanding sugar made by Duff Goldman. That was the first I had used his products but if you’ve seen them in the store, I’m pretty sure they’ve caught your eye. He has a full line of cake decorating supplies as well as cake mixes. Some of the flavors I’ve seen are Camouflage, Zebra, Tie-Dye, Confetti, and Minty-Chip Chocolate. Lucky for me, I was contacted to review a couple of his mixes.
I was sent Blue Suede and Peanut Butter+Chocolate (of course, right?). These I’m showing you are the Blue Suede. They’re blue (obvi) with “a splash” of blueberry flavor. As soon as I saw them my wheels starting turning with cupcake theme ideas. You could have a Smurf party. Because I have baby on the brain, they would make awesome BOY cupcakes for a gender reveal. Or, you could make a wintery looking cake or cupcake, like I did.
The blue wasn’t quite as blue as I thought it would be, but that’s very possibly because when opening the color/flavor packet, I spilled a little on the counter. Oops. They were still a really pretty blue. They have a hint of blueberry flavor but it’s not at all overwhelming. And the cream cheese frosting is really good, too.
I honestly hadn’t used a cake mix in quite awhile and it was so nice to take a shortcut. Plus, Duff’s cake mixes use low protein, low gluten flour, which makes them lighter & fluffier. I like knowing that I’m using quality ingredients. I’m excited to try the Peanut Butter+Chocolate mix but I’m saving it for post-Christmas holiday baking.
I’ve seen Duff’s cake mixes at Target, Meijer, and Walmart. And Michaels is where I found the sanding sugar. Or you can order from the website. Use code NUMMYCAKE20 for 20% off.
Finally, the people at Duff were kind enough to offer one of YOU the chance to win a Blue Suede cake mix with Cream Cheese frosting. Enter below via Rafflecopter. Good luck!
